Often you will find large and modern oceanfront homes next to simple old beach houses.

Another nearby shopping area to visit is the Shops at Mauna Lani, an upscale shopping center with a variety of shops, services and restaurants.
 
When it comes time to find a nice restaurant, try Brown's Beach House Restaurant at the nearby Fairmont Orchid resort. Serving a menu full of fresh seafood, Brown's Beach House Restaurant is a luxurious dining experience. Another great treat to try in the area are the fresh made malasadas with a variety of toppings and fillings served up by the Hot Malasadas food truck.
 

Things to Do

Puako also has many opportunities to explore the area and have fun. The following activities and places are some of the best to try.
 
If you want to support a local farm and also get some great local produce, visit Kekela Farm’s market, which is open on Tuesdays from 2 to 5 p.m. Another great thing to do in the area is the Kona Marathon Events Health and Fitness Fair.
 
There are also great beaches to enjoy in Puako, such as Waialea Bay, a gorgeous cove with white sand beaches and perfect for snorkeling or surfing. Also available in the area is the community’s own Puako Beach, which is perfect for scuba diving, boating, swimming, and other beachfront activities.
